A Hall of Fame? Why not. Every sports league has one and so do most industries, especially those around us. ASI, PPAI, Site, etc. have one so why not us? In thinking back of my time as the president of the Premium Marketing Club of NY, IMRA and now IMA, there have been a lot of people who I met over the years who had a great influence on me and the industry and helped me in my career. I thought it might be a good idea to honor their contributions. We do not have to limit it to just IMA. It should include people who were instrumental in building this channel long before IMA’s existence. There are many people who helped pave the way for our careers. Many are individuals whom you may have never heard of. We could steal from the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame and say that after 25 years in the Channel, you can qualify. Below is a list of a few people that I would vote for the Hall of Fame. I chose to highlight people who are no longer involved or with us but there are many more people I could add.
George Kling – he began his sales career at Branford's Ude Murray & Cannan. He later worked for Columbia Records and Dymo Industries in New York City before starting his own marketing consulting firm, Potential Profits Group. George brought a lot of brands into our market and was the original National Marketing Company. To those of us who knew George – we all wanted to be him when we grew up, because he had the best deal in the industry. George was big in stature and had a booming voice but was the first one to reach out to help you when you needed it.
Howard Henry - was one of the pioneers of the incentive marketplace. He was the Executive Director of the Association of Incentive Marketing (AIM) and its predecessor association, NPSE (National Premium Sales Executives) and the Premium Marketing Club of NY. Yet he always thought of the entire incentive marketplace. As a result, when banking incentives and premiums were attacked in 1984, he was instrumental in forming The Incentive Federation, Inc., an umbrella trade association. The Incentive Federation has since served as the governmental affairs arm of the incentive marketplace and remained its executive director for almost 25 years. His association management company, Meredith & Henry, formed with his friend, mentor and partner George Meredith, provided the necessary support for trade associations and many individuals in the incentive marketplace. The incentive marketplace has always been fragmented. Yet for over thirty years, Howard Henry did as much as anyone to expand its size and scope, to help it speak with a united voice and to represent all aspects of incentives, premiums, rewards and recognition as broadly as possible.
Walt Tabor – was the publisher of Premium Incentive Business, Walt was one of the industry’s most avid supporters, a generous benefactor who set up the IMRA scholarship program that gave out thousands of dollars in scholarship money to children of members and he was a mentor to many people throughout the industry.
Pete Erickson – he was the president of Hall Erickson that ran The Motivation Show in Chicago. Pete was very active in helping to promote education in the industry and was very generous in his financial support of the industry associations. He was a big supporter in the establishment of IMA.
Karen Renk – was the Executive Director of IMRA for many years and the original Executive Director of IMA. Karen was the go to person for many of us in the industry and she helped many of us in our careers and when you were doing a job search, your first call was to Karen. Karen was very instrumental in IMA’s success and she asked you to get involved you never said no. She was the heart and soul of IMA until she retired. We honor her memory with the Karen Renk Fellowship Award that is awarded each year to the person that demonstrates a substantial commitment to IMA through time and effort to promote the Industry.
Before you send me a list of people I left out, I could name many more. I just wanted to introduce the idea for discussion. Much of what makes our industry great are the individuals whose legacies brought us the amazing opportunities we have today.
